About us
The useful thing to know about a locksmith is what they refuse to do.
Anybody can list services. What actually separates one locksmith from another is the set of decisions made when nobody is checking: whether a door gets drilled because it is quicker, whether a customer is told the cheap fix exists, whether a job gets turned down because it should not be done at all. This page sets out where those lines sit for us.

Mobile units, 81 suburbs, and the workshop is the vehicle
There is no shop to visit, and that is deliberate rather than a limitation. Locksmithing is a trade that happens at the door, the premises or the vehicle, so the tools travel and the customer does not. It also removes an incentive that shapes a lot of bad advice elsewhere: when there is no workshop to fill, there is no reason to recommend that something be taken away and worked on.
The footprint takes in eighty-one suburbs: the City Bowl, the seaboard, the whole southern line, the False Bay coast, the northern belt, the West Coast strip, the Helderberg basin and the Winelands towns beyond it. Each of those has its own page on this site rather than appearing as a name on a list, because the doors, the hardware and the failure patterns genuinely differ between them. You can find yours through our locksmith near me page or from the locksmith Cape Town coverage list.
The phone is answered 24 hours a day, seven days a week, including public holidays. Keeping that promise is a rostering problem rather than a marketing one, and the only test that counts is whether anything actually leaves a depot in the small hours of a Sunday. It also means we will occasionally tell somebody that what they are describing would be cheaper and better handled after sunrise — which is the other half of running an honest emergency locksmith line.
Four trades under one job title
These require different equipment, different knowledge and, frankly, different temperaments.
Homes
Whole-property work, key control after a purchase, and the doors nobody counted.
Residential locksmithBusinesses
Doors that must resist entry and guarantee escape, on hardware rated for real traffic.
Commercial locksmithVehicles
A genuinely separate trade, done at the car, with entitlement established first.
Car locksmithOut of hours
A phone that answers and a vehicle that leaves, ranked by consequence rather than order.
Emergency locksmithPlanned work
The cheaper half of this trade, booked at your convenience rather than at a crisis.
Lock change servicesWant to talk to somebody who asks questions first?
Tell us what is happening and you will get a diagnosis rather than a price list. Sometimes that diagnosis is that you do not need us.
Five things we will not do
Published so you can hold us to them, and so you know what to expect from anybody else.
We will not open a property or a vehicle without establishing entitlement. Opening a door is, by definition, the ability to get into somewhere that is not ours, and a trade that did that for whoever sounded confident would be a service to thieves. It occasionally makes a job slower. It is never skipped, and anybody willing to skip it for you would skip it for somebody standing outside your house.
We will not reach for a drill as an opening move. Non-destructive entry takes longer and is the correct default, because drilling means you are buying a replacement cylinder on top of the call-out and, on older joinery, potentially damaging something that cannot be reordered. Where a mechanism genuinely is seized or already broken, drilling is the honest answer — and it gets explained before it happens rather than after.
We will not quote a firm price for work nobody has seen, sell a lock change to somebody who locked their keys inside, or claim every vehicle on the road can be handled at the roadside when some genuinely require a franchised dealer. Each of those costs us money to say. Each of them is the reason to believe the recommendation on the occasions when it is substantial.
How we would like to be judged
Practical tests you can apply to us, or to anybody else standing in your hallway.
- Was the whole plot looked at before a single suggestion was made?
- Did they ask what the key does — turns freely, partly, or not at all?
- Was anything on the property described as fine and left alone?
- Was the reasoning specific enough to repeat back afterwards?
- Did they explain what happens to the door before touching it?
- Were you told when waiting until morning would cost you less?
- Did they establish who is entitled to authorise the work?
- Did the job finish in one visit, or generate a second one?
An informed customer is a cheaper customer, including for us
Most of the money wasted in this trade is spent on the wrong thing rather than at the wrong price. A perfectly healthy cylinder replaced because a key had worn out. A premium lock fitted into a soft frame. An upgrade concentrated on the one door nobody could reach. None of those are overcharging — every item was supplied at a fair price — and all of them were the wrong purchase.
So the pages on this site explain the reasoning rather than listing products. What a key doing three different things tells you about the fault. Why frames fail before mechanisms. When cloning a car key removes an option you may want later. Why a business door has to keep people out and let them out at the same time. Anybody reading that is harder to sell something useless to, and that is the intention.
The practical version of it is that we would rather spend ten minutes on the phone establishing that you need a lock repair rather than a replacement, or that your problem is a door rather than a lock at all. That conversation costs us the larger job often enough to be inconvenient, and it is the only reason anybody should trust the recommendation when it does turn out to be the expensive one.
Diagnose, load, do it once, say what remains
Four stages, and the first one happens before anybody has left.
- 01
Diagnosed on the phone
Enough questions to know the fault, which occasionally ends with us saying you do not need us.
- 02
Loaded for what you described
So the job finishes in one visit instead of generating a second appointment.
- 03
Done without damage
Non-destructive by default, with anything irreversible explained before it starts.
- 04
Told what is still outstanding
Plainly, priced separately, and without pretending a temporary fix was the final one.
Three jobs we talked somebody out of
The clearest way to describe how a business works is what it declines.
The lock change nobody needed
A caller had shut their keys indoors during a gale, been readmitted by a neighbour within the hour, and rang wanting every cylinder on the property replaced because the episode had rattled them.
Not a single key had left the building and no stranger held one, so there was no exposure to close. We told them that and declined the work. Replacing cylinders earns its cost when it turns a figure nobody knows into one somebody does; in this case the figure had never been in question.
The car we sent to the dealership
A late-model vehicle whose manufacturer locks down key data tightly enough that producing one at the kerbside is not a realistic proposition, and an owner already reaching for a diary.
That came out inside the first few minutes of the conversation instead of after somebody had been charged for travelling, together with a plain account of why the franchise was the correct destination. Talking up what can be done to a car burns a customer's afternoon and every scrap of credibility along with it.
The midnight job that should have been Tuesday
A call near midnight about a garage side door that had stopped locking, on an empty garage with the internal door to the house perfectly secure.
Not an emergency — an inconvenience with a bad timestamp. Booked for the following afternoon, diagnosed properly in daylight, and dealt with for a fraction of a night rate. Saying so is the whole point of answering the phone at that hour.
What we do not claim
You will not find invented star ratings, review counts, response times or years-of-experience figures anywhere on this site. If it is not something we can stand behind, it is not written down.
That includes prices. What a job costs depends on what is wrong with it, and any firm figure quoted before somebody has seen the door is a figure that gets revised on the doorstep.
Where we work
Eighty-one suburbs, each with its own page describing what the buildings and hardware in that specific place are actually like.
That runs from the City Bowl out to Melkbosstrand, down to Simon's Town, round to Gordon's Bay and inland to Wellington — with an honest note where somewhere is a genuine drive.

Frequently asked questions
Quick answers to what Cape Town residents and businesses ask us most. Need something not covered here? Reach out — a real locksmith will help.
No, and that is deliberate. Locksmithing happens at the door, the premises or the vehicle, so the tools travel and you do not. It also removes an incentive that shapes a lot of poor advice elsewhere — with no workshop to keep busy, there is no reason to suggest that something be taken away and worked on when it could be dealt with where it stands.
Eight regions and eighty-one suburbs, every one of which has a written page here instead of appearing as an entry in a list. The spread reaches from the old city out along both coastlines, down the peninsula, up through the northern belt and over the neck into the wine country. Anywhere that means a long journey is described as one.
Yes: a person picks up and a van can be dispatched, on every day of the calendar, holidays included. Whether a business means it is not settled by what its website says but by what occurs when somebody rings in the small hours. It carries a corollary too — occasionally you will be advised that daylight would serve you better and cost you less.
Because a firm figure quoted before anybody has seen the door is the figure most likely to be revised on your doorstep. A lockout on a modern cylinder and a lockout on a jammed multipoint door in a swollen frame contain different amounts of work. What you should get instead is a straight explanation of what it depends on, and a settled figure once somebody has looked.
Yes, and it happens often enough to be commercially inconvenient. Somebody who locked their keys inside does not need a lock change. A key that needs jiggling usually needs a new key rather than a new cylinder. A door that will not open while the key turns freely is a door problem, not a lock problem. Saying so is the reason to trust the recommendation when it is substantial.
Because opening a property or a vehicle is the ability to get into somewhere that is not ours. A trade that did that for whoever sounded confident would be useful mainly to thieves. It occasionally makes a job slower, and it is exactly the reason nobody can have your house or car opened while you are somewhere else. We do not make exceptions to it.
Most of what is genuinely useful is planned. Rekeying after a purchase, servicing a mechanism that has been stiffening, sorting out access on a business premises, making a spare car key while you still have one — all of it is booked at your convenience and costs materially less than the same underlying problem does once it has become an emergency.
Ask yourself four things afterwards. Was the whole property looked at, or only the door they were called to? Were you asked how the key behaves? Did anything get described as perfectly fine? And could you now explain their reasoning to somebody else? A costly recommendation you cannot restate is one to get a second view on, however assured it sounded at the time.
Spending on the wrong thing rather than paying too much. A healthy cylinder replaced because a key had worn out. A premium lock fitted into a soft frame that would give way first. An upgrade concentrated on the front door while the garage side entrance carries a builder's fitting. Every item fairly priced, and the money aimed at the wrong problem entirely.
