Areas we serve
One city, eight regions, and hardware that fails differently in each of them.
Cape Town is not a single climate with suburbs in it. A mountain runs down the middle, two coastlines behave completely differently from one another, a rain shadow makes one side of the peninsula far wetter than the other, and an hour inland the summers are hot enough to move metal. Locks and doors respond to all of that, which is why every suburb here has its own page instead of a name on a list.

Salt, wind, damp and heat, all within an hour of each other
Four environmental forces, each of which destroys hardware in a different way and on a different schedule.
Salt belongs to the shoreline and it attacks from within. Any fitting left out in the air along the seaboard, the False Bay shore or the western strip is bathed in it around the clock, and budget ironmongery in that position stops being durable goods and becomes stock you reorder. Gate mechanisms, padlocks and external cylinders there run on a replacement rhythm most households long ago stopped noticing.
Wind is the second, and it is mechanical rather than chemical. It drives doors through their arc and slams them, loads hinges in one direction for months at a time, and works closers far beyond their rating. The consequence is a leaf that sits lower than it did and a bolt that no longer arrives where its keeper is — which is a door problem that gets diagnosed as a lock problem constantly.
Moisture is the story on the mountain's wetter flank, where months of rain fatten joinery until leaves and frames no longer meet properly. Heat is the inland story, where a valley floor grows an aluminium frame enough that a door fastening at breakfast will not at three. Both come and go with the season, both want realignment rather than new parts, and between them they account for an enormous number of pointless cylinders every year.
The property types we work on
Six broad categories, each with its own characteristic fault and its own correct answer.
Coastal suburbs
Salt and abrasion on everything exposed, where fittings chosen on price are consumables.
Lock repairSlopes and terraces
Properties with entrances on several levels, where the reachable door is rarely the front one.
Security lock upgradesEstablished suburbs
Decades of hardware and several owners' worth of keys that nobody has ever counted.
Lock change servicesNew developments
Uniform builder's cylinders, multipoint gear, and buildings still settling into place.
Lock installationTrading and business districts
Duty cycles that consume domestic hardware, on doors a business cannot afford to lose.
Commercial locksmithEverywhere, at any hour
Out-of-hours cover across the same footprint, ranked by consequence rather than order.
Emergency locksmithThe age of a suburb decides the work more than its postcode
Three broad vintages, each with its own characteristic failure and its own correct answer.
The oldest parts of the city carry original joinery — timber doors, original frames and mortice housings cut for hardware nobody manufactures now. There the discipline is restraint: non-destructive opening as a firm default, modern mechanisms fitted into existing housings rather than fresh cuts, and a refusal to treat a hundred-year-old stile as something that can be drilled and moved on from.
The mid-century and later suburbs are where most of the ordinary domestic work happens. Solid enough construction, hardware that has usually been in place for decades, and key populations that have quietly grown across several owners. Most of what these properties need is a rekey, a clean and an honest conversation about which of their several entrances anybody could actually reach.
The newest developments bring the opposite problem. Uniform construction, aluminium and multipoint gear cut to fine tolerances, and entire streets handed over with the same builder's cylinder in the same year. New buildings also settle for their first few years, which is why so many of these doors need a setting-out adjustment rather than anything replaced.

What a suburb page tells you
Each of the eighty-one pages covers the same ground for its own specific place.
- What the buildings and doors in that area are actually like.
- Which environmental forces are doing the damage there.
- The faults that come up repeatedly on those particular streets.
- What we would recommend fitting, and what is not worth spending on.
- How the property types differ between one end of the suburb and the other.
- Neighbouring areas covered by the same crew.
- Whether it is a short hop or a genuine drive.
- Straight answers to the questions people in that area ask most.
Regional crews, and honesty about distance
Eight regions, worked as rounds rather than as a single pool of vehicles covering everything equally.
Each region is served by people who work it regularly, which matters more than it sounds. A crew that spends its weeks on the Atlantic Seaboard knows what salt does to gate hardware there; one working the Winelands knows that a door refusing at three in the afternoon is a heat problem rather than a mechanical one. That familiarity is the practical argument for regional rounds over a single dispatch pool.
It also means being straightforward about distance. Somewhere at the far end of a round — Melkbosstrand, Scarborough, Wellington — is a genuine drive rather than a few minutes, and it is better to hear that when you call than to sit watching a road. What we do about it is load for household and commercial work together on those runs, so nothing generates a second journey.
If you want the coverage laid out street by street with a note on what to expect from each area, the 24 hour locksmith near me page does exactly that, and the locksmith in Cape Town overview sets out the full range of work. Otherwise, find your suburb in the regions below — every one of them has its own page describing what the doors there are actually like.
Coverage — your questions
Quick answers to what Cape Town residents and businesses ask us most. Need something not covered here? Reach out — a real locksmith will help.
Because the work genuinely differs. Salt on the Atlantic Seaboard, wind on the West Coast, winter damp in the Southern Suburbs and summer heat in the Winelands each destroy hardware in a different way and on a different schedule. A page that said the same thing about all eighty-one places would be describing none of them accurately.
Yes, and where somewhere is a genuine drive rather than a few minutes we say so on its page rather than implying otherwise. The far ends of each round — places like Melkbosstrand, Scarborough and Wellington — are real journeys, and the honest response to that is to load for household and commercial work together so nothing needs a second visit.
Almost certainly. Suburb pages describe areas rather than listing every road, so if your suburb appears in one of the eight regions then your street is within it. If you are genuinely unsure, give us the suburb or the nearest main road on the phone and you will get a straight answer either way.
Considerably, and it is one of the more useful things a local locksmith knows. An exposed coastal elevation needs corrosion-resistant fittings as a baseline rather than an upgrade. A hot inland valley needs multipoint gear set for the hottest afternoon rather than the mild morning it was fitted on. Specifying from a catalogue rather than for the position is how hardware becomes a consumable.
Because the door is moving rather than the lock. Timber swells with damp through a wet winter and shrinks again as it dries, so the leaf stops meeting its keeper cleanly for part of the year. Inland the same thing happens in reverse, with metal frames expanding in summer heat. Either way it is an adjustment, and a new cylinder changes nothing about it.
Yes, in two specific ways. Recent construction settles for its first years, so multipoint gear cut to fine tolerances stops seating cleanly even though the handle still travels fully — that is a setting-out job rather than a fault. And whole streets are frequently handed over with the same builder's cylinder in the same year, which makes a rekey after transfer more worthwhile than usual.
Regions are worked as rounds by crews who cover them regularly, which matters more than it sounds. Somebody who spends their weeks on the coast recognises salt damage immediately; somebody working the Winelands knows that an afternoon-only fault is heat rather than mechanism. That familiarity is the practical reason for regional rounds rather than one undifferentiated dispatch pool.
It depends entirely on what you mean by difficult. The exposed coastal stretches destroy hardware fastest through salt and abrasion. The windiest parts wear doors and closers out mechanically. The wettest suburbs move timber the most. Inland heat moves metal frames the furthest. Each is manageable once somebody specifies for it rather than against it.
