In an older house the front door is the main opening and everything else is a window. In a house built for a view, an entire elevation opens: four, six or eight glass panels stacking or sliding aside onto a terrace. That opening is bigger than the front door by an order of magnitude, and what holds it shut is a multipoint mechanism running in aluminium sections rather than anything resembling a conventional lock.
Those systems are perfectly good when they are working and correctly adjusted, and they have their own failure modes. Gearing wears, handles lose their connection to the mechanism, rollers flatten under the weight of large panels, and — most commonly — the frame settles slightly so the multipoints stop engaging fully. When that happens the door still closes and appears locked, which is exactly the problem.
So the specialist skill here is not cutting keys, it is understanding aluminium door gear. Adjusting a stacking system so its locking points seat properly again, replacing worn gearing rather than an entire door, and knowing when a handle set is the fault rather than the mechanism is most of what we do. It is lock repair work, but not the kind most people picture.
