Automotive locksmith work, done at the vehicle
The car-side of locksmith work has changed enormously over the last decade. Mechanical keys still exist on older vehicles, but most modern cars on Cape Town roads are running transponder chips, rolling-code remotes, push-to-start proximity systems or full smart keys with encrypted handshakes. That means a car locksmith today is a diagnostic technician as much as a key cutter — and our mobile workshops are built for both.
What our car locksmith team covers
- Car lockouts — non-destructive entry when keys are inside, broken, or the central locking has failed.
- Lost car keys — full replacement keys cut and programmed at your vehicle.
- Car key programming — adding new keys, removing old keys from the system, recoding after immobiliser work.
- Smart key programming — proximity keys, push-to-start systems, fob replacement and pairing.
- Transponder keys — chipped key blanks cut and coded to your vehicle's immobiliser.
- Ignition repair — worn barrels, snapped keys in the cylinder, failed switches and starter-side faults.
Where we come to
Anywhere in the metro. Common car locksmith call locations include the V&A Waterfront and Cavendish Square parkades, Canal Walk at Century City, the airport, shopping centres in Claremont and Tygervalley, residential streets and apartment parking across Sea Point, Green Point and the CBD, and roadside breakdowns along the N1, N2 and M3. The locksmith brings the equipment to you, not the other way around.
How a car key replacement actually works
For most modern vehicles the workflow is consistent. We take the make, model and year (the VIN where possible) before dispatching, so the vehicle arrives with the right key blank already in the kit. On site, the locksmith verifies ownership, opens the vehicle if needed, cuts the mechanical blade to match the door or ignition cylinder, then connects the diagnostic interface to the car's OBD port to program the transponder or smart key to the immobiliser. Once the new key is paired, we test it on every function — doors, ignition, remote, panic — before invoicing.
If a previous key has been lost or compromised, we can also deauthorise it from the vehicle so it no longer starts the car. That step is one most people don't realise is available; it's the right thing to do whenever a lost key isn't quickly recovered.
The vehicles we work on
European, Asian and most American makes — and the South African market staples in particular. Toyota, Volkswagen, Ford, BMW, Audi, Mercedes-Benz, Hyundai, Suzuki, Kia, Renault, Mazda, Nissan, Mitsubishi, Honda and the rest of the everyday Cape Town fleet. There are a handful of very new models that require a dealer-level routine; for those, we'll be straight with you up front rather than try the job and fail.
Ignition trouble vs key trouble
A common car-side call is "my key won't turn" or "the car cranks but won't start." Both are locksmith problems often enough that calling us first saves a trip to the mechanic. Worn ignition barrels are routine on older Toyotas and VWs; failed transponder reads are common when the key has been dropped repeatedly; and immobiliser comms drop out on a small number of models when the battery in the key fob ages. We diagnose at the car before quoting on a fix.
After-hours and roadside calls
Car lockouts and lost-key calls don't keep office hours. The automotive team works the same 24/7 dispatch as the rest of the business. If you're stuck at a Camps Bay restaurant after closing, in the airport parkade at midnight or on the side of the M3 with a key that won't turn, we're already on the way once you call.
