How smart keys actually work

A proximity smart key is a tiny radio. It listens for a low-frequency challenge from the car, replies with an encrypted code, and the car decides whether to unlock and whether to allow start. There's no chip to insert and no blade to turn — the entire authentication is wireless. A flat fob battery, a damaged antenna, a corrupted module or a wiped memory all break the chain, and the car simply won't recognise the fob.

Smart-key calls we handle

  • Dead battery — replaced and tested.
  • Cracked or water-damaged fob casing — re-housed.
  • One-of-two fobs lost — fresh fob programmed, lost fob wiped.
  • All fobs lost — full replacement key cut, programmed and paired.
  • Receiver module suspected dead — diagnosed and quoted.
  • Spare fob added to an existing pair so you have three working.

On-site, no tow

Smart-key programming runs through the diagnostic port — we plug in at your vehicle, run the manufacturer's pairing routine, register the new fob, and clear any unknown fobs from memory. No dealer trip. No tow. Most jobs are done at your home, office or wherever the car is.

Often paired with

Smart-key calls frequently come with a wider key-control review — see lost car keys for full-replacement flow, transponder keys for older systems, and ignition repair if push-button start is failing intermittently.

  • A smart key is a proximity fob — the car detects it within range, unlocks the doors and allows push-button start without inserting anything. A normal key has a physical blade you turn in the ignition.
