What changes when the locks are commercial
Commercial locksmith work is a different discipline to residential. The doors are heavier, the locks are rated for far more daily cycles, the consequences of getting it wrong are bigger, and the work usually has to happen around the business — not the other way round. Our commercial team is structured for exactly that: experienced technicians, properly stocked vehicles, scheduling that works after-hours and over weekends, and a clear key register handed back at the end of every job.
The commercial work we do most
- Master key systems — one key per person, the right doors for that person, full audit trail.
- High security locks — drill-resistant, pick-resistant cylinders with restricted keyways.
- Commercial lock change — planned re-keys after staff turnover or building handovers.
- Commercial lock repair — keeping heavily-used doors operating cleanly day in, day out.
- Office lockout response — fast, discreet entry when a key-holder is unreachable.
Sectors and premises we work across
Our commercial locksmith calendar runs the full mix Cape Town's economy throws up. We handle professional services firms in the CBD, hospitality operators on the Atlantic Seaboard, retail and food businesses at the V&A Waterfront and Cavendish Square, light industrial premises in Montague Gardens and the Airport precinct, body corporates across Sea Point and Green Point apartment blocks, and education and healthcare sites in the Southern and Northern Suburbs.
Each sector brings its own requirements. Retail needs after-hours work and very fast response on lockouts. Body corporates need restricted keyways and a clear chain of custody. Offices need master key planning that doesn't disrupt staff. Industrial sites need heavy-duty hardware that survives the environment. We size the proposal to the sector, not the other way round.
How we build a master key plan
Most commercial sites end up with a master key system within their first few years of operation, often after the third or fourth re-keying exercise makes the cost of a proper system obvious. The planning conversation is short: we walk the premises, list every door, group the doors logically (common areas, suite entries, comms cabinets, secure storage, executive offices), and propose a key hierarchy that gives each role exactly the access they need. We then key the new cylinders to that hierarchy, install them in a single coordinated visit, and hand over a printed key schedule that lives with the facilities manager.
Restricted keyways and key control
Restricted-keyway hardware means key blanks are controlled at source — no copying at a corner kiosk, no untracked duplicates handed around the office. For most serious commercial sites that single change does more for security than any other lock upgrade. We supply the blanks, log each cut to a named keyholder and require written authorisation for duplicates.
Emergency response for businesses
When a commercial site has a lock failure, every minute the doors stay closed is lost trade or stalled work. Our commercial emergency response runs on the same 24/7 dispatch model as our residential service. Call, get a real locksmith, get a vehicle on the way. Most CBD, Foreshore and Waterfront calls are reached inside 30 minutes; outer business districts a little longer. We carry replacement commercial-grade hardware in the vehicle so a failed lock is fully restored, not patched temporarily.
