What "emergency door opening" actually covers

This is the call you make when the key turns but nothing happens, when the key won't enter the cylinder at all, when the handle swings but the door stays shut, or when the door simply won't move despite being unlocked. The cause is usually mechanical — a failed cylinder, a jammed gearbox, a dropped door, a stuck deadbolt, a broken handle spring — and the fix is mechanical too.

Diagnosing before opening

Forcing a stuck door before understanding why it's stuck usually creates two problems instead of one. A trained locksmith looks at the door gap, the strike alignment, the cylinder feel and the handle action before touching tools. From there we either ease the door open by manipulating the latch, decoding the cylinder, or bypassing the gearbox — and then we tell you exactly what to repair so it doesn't happen again. Often the answer is a quick lock repair; sometimes it's a full lock installation.
