There is a version of security that would work perfectly here and ruin the street: a steel gate bolted over every doorway, oversized hardware screwed through original timber, and a facade that no longer looks like the Bo-Kaap. We do not do that, and the good news is that we do not have to. Almost everything worth adding can be added on the inside face of the door or inside the frame.

In practice that means a well-fitted deadbolt behind an original rim lock, hinge bolts that stop a door being levered on its hanging side, a properly reinforced keep in the frame, and a cylinder with genuine anti-pick and anti-drill protection where the door is genuinely exposed. That is standard security lock upgrade work executed with an eye on what shows from the pavement.

When a lock truly is finished, we look for a replacement that fits the existing mortice pocket rather than one that requires enlarging it. Enlarging a pocket in an old door is irreversible, and it weakens exactly the part of the door that the lock is relying on. If the only honest option is a modern lock installation, you will hear why, what it involves and what it cannot be undone from — before anything is cut.

After a wet week, an original timber door swells, lifts against its frame and stops aligning with the keep. The key turns, the bolt throws into nothing, and eventually the door will not open at all.

This is a carpentry problem masquerading as a lock problem, and replacing the lock would fix nothing. We open it, then ease the door, adjust the keep and service the mechanism so the seasonal movement stops jamming it. It is the cheapest kind of Bo-Kaap job and the one most often misdiagnosed.
